Chemical Bath, Anyone?

If someone were to tell you they planned on dousing you head to toe with chemicals every day of your life, you'd be ready to fight to the finish, huh? Well, the funny thing is, that's just want the average American does to himself every day.
If someone were to tell you they planned on dousing you head to toe with chemicals every day of your life, you’d be ready to fight to the finish, huh?  Well, the funny thing is, that’s just want the average American does to himself every day.  From your shampoo and hair dye to your formaldehyde laced painted toes, your soap, underarm deodorant  and everything else in-between is loaded with carcinogens (cancer causing agents). Do me a favor.  Pick up your favorite bottle of lotion and read the ingredient label.  Do you recognize any of those ingredients?  I can tell you one you may not recognize by it’s proper name–Propylene glycol–but you would recognize if you knew it was anti-freeze.  Would you knowingly slather yourself down every day in anti-freeze?  I think not.  That’s why it’s so important to educate yourself about the cosmetics you use on your body.  Just think, every day of your life your body is being bombarded with poisons that your poor little liver is going to have to struggle to break down and excrete from your body in an effort to prevent illness or disease from developing.  Now, I’m not suggesting that your run around ashy, smelling like a wildebeast (don’t know what they smell like, but the name sounds funky).  What I am suggesting is that you seriously consider switching to natural, organic body products.  There’s a wonderful line I use called Aubrey Organics, carried at most Health Food Stores, and Carol’s Daughter, found at the Fox Hills Mall, has an excellent line of natural hair and body products, as well. The hard truth is we really shouldn’t be putting anything on our body that we can’t eat.  Your skin is like a sponge; whatever you put on it gets absorbed quickly and directly.  I shudder to think about the damage those of you who go for those fake spray tanners are doing to your health…Thankfully, God gave me a natural tan so I’ve never gone there.  For years now, my favorite beauty product has been good old-fashioned unrefined, organic coconut oil.  Keeps my skin glowing, my hair shining, and it’s cheap!  I especially want to encourage women to give up the use of commercial anti-perspirants.  I’m no doctor or scientist, but good old common sense tells me there’s a definite connection between putting chemicals under your arms from the time you reach puberty on and breast cancer.  Try using a natural deodorant called ”The Crystal.”  That, too, is carried at most health food stores.  And if you must color your hair, try using one of the natural hair dyes available that don’t send harmful chemicals directly to your brain!  A large part of staying healthy and preventing illness starts with the products we choose to use on our bodies.  So make choices that extend and encourage good health.  Your liver will thank you!

Hey Kim I enjoyed your blog about what we’re using on our bodies. I’ve just become a big fan of Carol’s Daughter and I really love her products. I haven’t used the crystal for my underarms but I will try it.

Kim that was very helpful info you put out there. I had no idea that the lotions and other products we put on our body is also passed through our liver. Girl you got some knowledge in you!

    Kim,
You’re so knowledgeable on how to live healthy This is my second visit to your blog. The first visit you had a post about Chicken and Waffles. I think you would love the community I live in. It’s a meditator/vegetarian community situated around a university in Fairfield, IA. The name of the university is Maharishi University of Management. One of the curriculums offered at the university is a degree in sustainable living. There’s a company here also that’s one of only a handful in the world that verifies whether or not a product is authentically organic.

I’ve been a vegetaria for 25 years. Recently because I got into the food business, I began to stray (NO MEAT) as far as proper foods. I started a cookie biz. Your articles are inspiring to be vigilant and to rethink my business approach. I want to be a responsible business owner.

    Thanks for your knowledge.

Thanks for this Kim it was very informative. It’s a coincidence that I am reading this the day after stumbling upon a health food store in my own neighborhood. All of the products are organic. I spent an hour shopping over it all. This is without a doubt the best way to take care of our bodies, it’s not cheap and it’s not easy but it’s worth it.

It’s amazing that a 14 year old niece of mine told me the same thing, but to hear it again from an adult whom I have come to respect over the years makes me wake up AGAIN and take notice…appreciate it….

    Hi Kim,

I couldn’t agree more that we are continually filling our bodies with unneeded toxins (often in the name of beauty). Luckily, many products Like Seventh Generation and Carol’s Daughter have begun taking the extra effort to make our products safe.

I firmly believe that a little extra money is worth it for a more healthy product :0)

Kim Neeley – That community you live in sounds amazing…Perhaps I’ll retire there one of these days:)

Everyone else – Love your comments. Please share this vital information with your loved ones. And yes, natural products are sometimes a little more expensive, but to me it’s worth it!

Yes, this is truly sad…this is one of the reasons I created Herbal Body Blessings, By Brodie’s Naturals LLC. So many folks don’t realize what they are doing to their bodies until…unusual cancers, degenerative diseases & thyroid & other gland issues arise.

Thanks Kim for helping to educate folks about these issues!

After reading this blog. I’ve decided to adventure to making my own hair care products. My hair is natural (locs) and think it might be time for me to give it a try since I maintain my own locs . .why not concoct some all natural good enough to eat conditioners (and shampoos). Thanks for the blog!

I agree, especially about the deodarants. I don’t think it is a good idea to keep the pores under your arms clogged. I have been telling my daughter this for years, but you know teenagers, the last thing they want to do is sweat, and of course they know everything. We are going to the mall right now. I will def pick up a crystal. If it works for me then hopefully she will use it.

Wildebeest smell like something in between a cow and a goat. Like this and any other herd animal, people follow the beaten path sometimes all too easily, then question too paranoid their past behaviours. Just do what feels right and doesn’t leave the shower smelling funny. I’m sure you’ll still look just fine.

checked out the blog and it’s crazy how common sense is so absent in our everyday train of thought. I am a chef, and I work with the best food i can get my hands on. Sometimes for the sake of flavor or texture i may stray but the heart of my cuisine is natural, organic, local, but also clean eating. You can have local, you can have organic and natural, but sometimes you loose it in the preparation. Thanks for the heads up, and making us think.

almost all petroleum derived hair dyes are cancerous we should find some alternative ones that are much safer.–

Enough About Tiger

Enough About Tiger

The way I see it, the biggest problem the Tiger Woods fiasco has exposed is our need to elevate mortal man to God-like status and then knock him off the altar and rip him to shreds. What is with that?

Turning the Cheek on Aging

Turning the Cheek on Aging

For most of us over a certain age, there’s a singular event or moment in our lives when we’re forced to reckon with the fact that we’re getting old.
